FAQs for Scholarships & Fellowships Offered by The Graduate College
General
-
What types of funding opportunities are available for graduate students?
We have a variety of funding opportunities, both internal and external, for our master's and doctoral students to explore.
Internal funding is awarded by an entity of Texas State University. The Graduate College offers the following options for which you can apply directly:
- Graduate College Scholarship
- Thesis Research Support Fellowship
- Dissertation Research Support Fellowship
We also recommend visiting your departmental and college websites for additional scholarships that may be available through those units.
External funding is awarded by entities outside of Texas State University. You can view hundreds of scholarships, fellowships, grants, internships, and other awards through our Graduate Funding Opportunities database.
Please keep in mind that funding opportunities, both internal and external, are typically competitive in nature, and therefore, not guaranteed. We encourage you to review our website for more details and to contact us at gradcollege@txstate.edu if you have questions.
-
Are international students eligible for scholarships and fellowships offered by The Graduate College?
Yes – in fact, we encourage international students to attend our Shop Talks to learn more!
-
What are the deadlines to apply for scholarships and fellowships offered by The Graduate College?
Please see the specific scholarship's or fellowship's page for deadline information:
-
When should I apply for a scholarship or fellowship?
You should apply as soon as the application is available. Scholarships open on October 1, and — even if you haven't completed your application for admission — it's better to get started sooner than later. Research fellowships are available twice yearly, and, again, we encourage you to apply as soon as the application opens.
-
What are the scholarship and fellowship requirements?
Scholarship and fellowship requirements vary. Please review our scholarships and fellowships page for more information.
-
What if I do not meet these requirements?
You can still submit an online application, but if you do not meet the requirements, you will not be considered. We encourage you to use the "check eligibility" feature of the application system to confirm the scholarships and fellowships for which you are eligible.
-
Who reviews scholarship and fellowship applications?
Committees review all graduate scholarship and fellowship applications.
-
How many scholarships and fellowships are awarded?
The number varies based on the scholarship and number of applicants.
-
What happens if I do not maintain the enrollment requirements?
The scholarship will be discontinued. If the scholarship has already been disbursed and the minimum enrollment has not been maintained, the scholarship needs to be repaid.
-
Am I eligible for in-state tuition, and if so, for how long? What do I need to do to receive in-state tuition since I am an out-of-state resident?
Out-of-state students may be eligible for in-state tuition if they receive a competitive Texas State scholarship awarded by a committee of at least $1,000 for the academic year. We will submit the in-state tuition form to Student Business Services.

The funding will be returned to The Graduate College and you must reapply to be considered for future terms.

Application
-
How do I get started?
Sign into the Bobcat Online Scholarship System (BOSS). The first time you access the scholarship system, you will need to complete the general application. Once you have done so, you will be able to see a list of opportunities, or available scholarships. The scholarships for which you meet initial eligibility requirements will be shown as recommended.
The general application, while required, is not the complete application for most scholarships. Make sure to read the instructions fully and submit all additional materials required for each scholarship prior to that scholarship’s deadline.
-
Where do I submit my documents?
The required documents for the scholarship application will be submitted through BOSS, the online scholarship system.
If your application requires letters of recommendation, the system will notify recommenders that their names have been submitted as references. They will be provided with a link to access the online scholarship application system.
Documents received by mail cannot be used to complete your application.
-
I need letters of reference from a professor, but I've been out of school for a while. What should I do?
Contact your previous professors and include in your correspondence how they knew you. If you are unable to contact your professors, watch the video “Requesting Letters of Recommendation” which covers exceptions for non-academic recommenders.
-
Can I use the same recommendation letters from my admissions applications?
If your references feel that the letter they provided for your admissions application is appropriate for your scholarship application, they can submit the same letter. However, they will need to resubmit the letter in the scholarship system.
-
Can I use letters from teaching assistants?
This is not recommended as it will weaken your application.
-
Is there a letter of recommendation template for your scholarships?
Not at this time. We do hold a workshop every semester that provides tips and best practices for requesting letters of recommendation for funding applications. Please review the video “Requesting Letters of Recommendation” for more details.
-
Can all of my recommendation letters be from professors?
Yes, unless specified otherwise in the scholarship description.
-
I missed the deadline to apply for funding. What can I do to find other opportunities?
You can check with your program, department, or college. You can also learn more about external funding opportunities via our website and video series. You can search our Funding Databases page for more external funding opportunities.
