Program Overview
Certification and Masters Degree in Education (CMED) 30-hour online degree designed for working professionals interested in teacher certification. Students on this path may receive their certification after 15 hours of academic course work and complete their master's degree while earning a teacher's salary.
Course Work
CMED is a full-certification program for individuals who prefer online instruction. All certification course work (15 hours) may be completed asynchronously. Following completion of the initial teacher certification course work, students are eligible to apply for state teacher certification. Once certified, they are eligible to work as teachers while they complete their remaining courses online, either in the evenings or asynchronously.

Program Details
Teacher Training Program students enter the program from a variety of fields, such as IT or event management, yet transition well to classroom teachers, directors and other roles in educational leadership.
Program Mission
Since its foundation as a normal school in 1899, the Department of Curriculum and Instruction has been an integral part of Texas State University, serving the state's need for trained public school teachers. Over the years, the programs have prepared knowledgeable and effective teachers who are responsive to the varying needs of society. The department has forged strong working partnerships with many Texas school districts, providing a diverse landscape for fieldwork and potential employment opportunities. Between rigorous curriculum and valuable experience, the department has grown to become one of the largest nationwide, offering a variety of comprehensive programs.
Career Options
The majority of the students remain in the Central Texas area, teaching in public and private schools. Graduates are also qualified to become instructional coaches, education consultants, curriculum coordinators, grade level or content team leaders, directors of departments, mentor teachers or authors of textbooks. Students are also prepared for doctoral study at Texas State or another qualified university.
Program Faculty
Faculty have primarily focused their research on teacher preparation and development, teacher induction and mentoring, and learning in field-based settings. They have made national and international presentations on these topics at the Association of Teacher Educators and the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education conferences. Their work has been published in journals such as the Journal of Teacher Education, Action in Teacher Education and Educational Leadership.

Transcripts & GPA
- baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university
- a copy of an official transcript from each institution where course credit was granted
- a 2.75 overall GPA or a 2.75 GPA in your last 60 hours of undergraduate course work, plus any completed graduate courses

Applicants are required to submit TOEFL scores that meet the minimum program requirements below unless they have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or one of the exempt countries found on the TEA standards and Texas State University standards.

*Exceptions are made for students who have earned a Bachelor’s degree or higher from an institution of higher education in India. These students must meet the following requirements:

- minimum individual module scores of 6.0
- official Duolingo scores required with a 110 overall
