Program Overview

The 30-credit Master of Education (M.A.) in Elementary Education with a concentration in Teaching and Transforming Advanced and Gifted Education equips students with skills, knowledge, and research for teaching, mentoring, and leadership in advanced and gifted education. This online program’s accelerated courses and practical emphasis on teaching and transforming gifted education offer educators an opportunity to make an immediate impact. Program graduates are well-prepared for a variety of career opportunities, such as gifted education specialist, advanced/gifted education coordinator, advanced-learning instructional coach, and classroom teacher with enhanced skills for nurturing the creativity and talents of all students. 

Course Work

Through this program's courses, students acquire skills, knowledge, and research for teaching, mentoring, and leadership roles in advanced/gifted education and for effecting change at multiple levels. Students will complete courses in areas such as: systems and emerging frameworks for gifted education; mentoring across the life course; leadership in gifted education; creative teaching and learning; contextual issues in advanced/gifted education; curriculum depth; and research in talent development. An open elective course allows students to explore an area of interest. The coursework is also useful for general education classroom teachers and special education teachers.

This program is completely online. If you are not a Texas resident and will not relocate, please visit the Office of Distance and Extended Learning. In this program, students acquire knowledge, skills, and research for teaching, mentoring, and leadership roles in advanced/gifted education. This degree program does not require teacher licensure or prior courses in specific areas for admission.

Program Mission

The mission of the program is to prepare students for teaching, mentoring, and leadership roles in gifted education. A strength of the program is its practical emphasis on transforming gifted education. Program goals include preparing students to: 

  • teach, mentor, and lead for student and educator talent development 
  • foster advanced learning and creativity with and for young people and educators 
  • analyze and communicate complex information for various needs and groups of people 
  • effect change at multiple levels  

Through teaching, research, and service, program faculty work toward collective flourishing.

    • a 2.75 overall GPA or a 2.75 GPA in your last 60 hours of undergraduate course work (plus any completed graduate courses)
