Program Overview

The program provides a supportive professional community for beginning teachers using integrated curriculum focused on principles of constructivist learning, teacher research, project-based learning, and performance assessment. Teacher Fellows are immersed in a Central Texas school district teaching position. Experienced teachers serve as on-site mentors and provide a variety of support.

Course Work

Teacher Fellows are fully certified first-year teachers who have completed all Texas certification requirements. Teacher Fellows assume full responsibility for a teacher-of-record position in a participating school district. During that year, Teacher Fellows are supported through direct involvement and supervision by both district and Texas State personnel.

The course sequence involves a total of 36 hours, including 12 hours of electives. Courses include elementary teaching strategies, research in human growth and development, classroom management and legal issues, action research for practitioners, and principles and practices in the elementary school.

Program Details

Teacher Fellows receive a $20,400 stipend in lieu of a district salary. The program also covers all tuition and fees for the 36 credit hours taken during the 15-month program.

Program Mission

The goals of the Teacher Fellows program address the needs of beginning teachers, experienced teachers, the university and the participating school district. The goals include:

  • supporting classroom-based inquiry focused on improved teaching and learning
  • providing continuous professional learning opportunities for beginning teachers, mentors and university faculty
  • building collaboration between the school district and university to bridge the gap between theory and practice
  • deepening the knowledge and skills of beginning teachers through advanced course work and on-site mentoring support to improve expertise and increase retention
  • assisting beginning teachers in creating environments promoting student learning and positive social interactions

Career Options

Since 1994, approximately 550 new teachers have participated in the program. Participating school districts include Hays CISD, Leander ISD, Lockart ISD, and Round Rock ISD.

As on-site mentors, experienced teachers provide the novice teachers with many types of support:

  • information about procedures
  • guidelines and expectations of the district
  • use and availability of materials and resources
  • teaching and assessment strategies
  • classroom organization, management, and methods for working with family and community members

    • baccalaureate degree in elementary education from a regionally accredited university (Non-U.S. degrees must be equivalent to a four-year U.S. Bachelor’s degree. In most cases, three-year degrees are not considered. Visit our International FAQs for more information.)
    • a copy of an official transcript from each institution where course credit was granted
    • a 2.75 overall GPA or a 2.75 GPA in your last 60 hours of undergraduate course work (plus any completed graduate courses)

    Applicants are required to submit an approved English proficiency exam score that meets the minimum program requirements below unless they have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or the equivalent from a country on our exempt countries list.

    • official TOEFL iBT scores required with a 78 overall
    • official PTE scores required with a 52 overall
    • official IELTS (academic) scores required with a 6.5 overall and
      • minimum individual module scores of 6.0
    • official Duolingo Scores required with a 110 overall
    • official TOEFL Essentials scores required with a 8.5 overall
